Today is the day! to plant your art today and post Today is the day! to plant your art today and post on Game of Shrooms for a scavenger hunt! Game of Shrooms 2022
https://yumfactory.com/gameofshrooms/
Game of Shrooms is a once a year world-wide art N seek event created by Attaboy. The next Game of Shrooms happens on June 11th, 2022. On that day, artists from all over the world hide their original mushroom-themed works in public places then they give hints(often on social media) for others to find AND KEEP!
See below for a map of participating artists, guidelines on how to best participate ethically, and add your general hiding location to the global map!
What?
Game of Shrooms is like an Easter Egg Hunt for art and celebrates the spirit of unexpected surprises. Started in 2019 by Attaboy. Artists and gatherers from Hong Kong, Berlin, Japan, the UK, India, Russia, Switzerland, Tasmania, the US, and many more participated in the world-wide event, creating a world-wide non-religious, no cost, personally interactive “art show” of making and sharing, suspense and sometimes absolute freakin’ wonder.
Last year thousands across the world participated in their local areas hiding and hunting safely during the pandemic!

Congratulations. You and almost 4,000 other fungip Congratulations. You and almost 4,000 other fungiphiles voted to select the CA State Mushroom! One mushroom got the most votes, all these amazing mushrooms - and mushroom lovers - were winners.
As you know, fungi sequester carbon, improve nutrient dynamics and water quality, and are critical food for wildlife, plants, and people. California faces many challenges going forward, and fungi provide many of the solutions we need. A State Mushroom will expand awareness of the pivotal role fungi play in the ecology of our state.
With the diversity of mushrooms in California, picking just one is a challenge that required the effort of thousands of dedicated mush enthusiasts. First, mycological societies around the state polled their members to develop the list of candidates. Then, those six candidates were selected and put to a vote by CA residents. Almost 4,000 votes were received from all corners of our state. Of the six candidates, the winner was…drumroll…
California Golden Chanterelles can be found under trees throughout California, sometimes hiding under their dear friend poison oak. They are a choice edible with a slightly fruity apricot scent and a nutty flavor when cooked with butter. Congratulations for your important role in selecting the California State Mushroom!!
MUSH CANDIDATES • VOTES
California Golden Chanterelle - 1409 VOTES
Western Jack-O-Lantern - 1115 VOTES
Lion's Mane - 365 VOTES
Candy Cap - 342 VOTES
Black Trumpet - 293 VOTES
King Bolete- 293 VOTES
Now, it’s time to convince our elected officials to pass legislation enshrining the California Golden Chanterelle as California’s State Mushroom. Your voice is still important as we bring mushrooms to the state capitol. Hopefully you are willing, if needed, to join your voice in educating legislators on the importance of a State Mushroom and all fungi to the health of California’s natural resources. Watch castatemushroom.org for progress updates.
Thank you again for speaking up and thanks to the individuals and groups who supported this project, particularly MykoWeb and The California Institute for Biodiversity.
Always keep the FUN in fungi! Michael Wood

CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: We’re excited to announce CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: We’re excited to announce the voting is now open for the CA State Mushroom! VISIT: castatemushroom.org and vote now. Candidates: Black Trumpet, Chantarelle, Candy Cap, King Bolete, Lions Mane & Western Jack-O-Lantern. One vote per CA resident. Polls close Saturday, May 7 at 11:59pm.
California has a state bird, state flower, state animal, even a state lichen, but not a state mushroom! Given California’s wealth of natural resources and the essential role mushrooms play in maintaining our biodiversity, it is time California had a State Mushroom!
Mycologists, mushroom societies, and other fungus lovers from around the state have identified six mushrooms that would best represent our wondrous state. Now we need the public’s help. All California residents are invited to vote for their favorite mushroom. The winning selection will be taken to the State Legislature to make it official.
This is important. Mushrooms have a central role in California’s ecology and deserve recognition of their contributions. Selection of a CA State Mushroom will help increase awareness of and funding for preservation of mushroom habitat and natural resources. This is the first step in a fun(gi) journey.

The Registry of Mushrooms in Works of Art with ELI The Registry of Mushrooms in Works of Art with ELIO SCHAECHTER
Wednesday, April 6 • 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM PST
Zoom (Virtual Event) • Registration sent to SDMYCO Members via email.

More than 20 years ago, Elio Schaechter, Ph.D., began compiling a list of paintings with mushrooms in them, something he called, “a sort of fancy form of stamp collecting.” He and a German mycologist, Hanns Kreisl, decided to combine forces and create an Internet-based Registry of Mushrooms in Works of Art, which is hosted on NAMA’s website.

Elio will discuss the origin and purpose of the registry in understanding the relationship between mushrooms and people as reflected in works of art from different historical periods. We will learn how many artists express appreciation of fungal beauty and broaden our awareness of the symbolic (and gastronomic) roles mushrooms may have played in various cultures through time.

Moselio “Elio” Schaechter was born in Milan, Italy in 1928. At age 12, his Jewish family relocated to Ecuador to escape Nazi persecution. Reading Paul de Kruif’s Microbe Hunters inspired his interest in microbiology, eventually leading him to pursue graduate studies higher education in the subject at the University of Kansas and University of Pennsylvania. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, performing microbial research at Walter Reed Medical Center and later spending time in Denmark in postdoctoral study. Eventually, he made his way back to the United States and became a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Tufts University, where he chaired the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology from 1970 to 1993, conducting research into microbial growth physiology and bacterial cell organization. Elio also developed and maintained a profound interest in field mycology through the Boston Mycological Club. Besides coauthoring numerous microbiology textbooks, he wrote In the Company of Mushrooms, (Harvard Press, 1997). Relocating to San Diego in 1994, he continued his teaching as Adjunct Faculty at San Diego State University and is a Visiting Scholar at UC San Diego. In 1997 he helped found the NAMA-affiliated San Diego Mycological Society, where he remains active to this day.
