About SDMS

We are a community of mycoenthusiasts with interests in all aspects of mycology including culinary, cultivation, identification, photography, ecology, art and more, who are eager to bring our love of mycology to the masses.

We meet on the first Monday of the month and have resumed in-person meetings. We meet at our usual space at Balboa Park, room 101 at 6:30 pm and speaker starts at 7pm.

A FREE Earth Day celebration presented by Vegan Food Popup. Featuring over 100 sustainable food, product and service vendors as well as environmental, conservation and animal rescue groups. Enjoy a full day of entertainment with speakers, music and activities for kids.

Since the first Earth Day observation in 1970, more than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day events each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

We are excited to continue the tradition of celebrating Earth Day at Balboa Park. This event is held on the expansive lawn located at Park Boulevard and Presidents Way.

#sandiegoearthfest is family-friendly and dog-friendly with free parking available. This is a zero-waste event.

For the first time in its 130+ year history, National Geographic Magazine has placed fungi as the cover story!

In addition to @insidenatgeo including fungi in their definition of “wildlife,” @natgeo has revealed a new issue of the magazine. It not only features morels on the cover but also includes four distinct articles on fungi: as a potential antidote for devastating plant diseases; as a danger to hitchhikers; as a key to cancer research breakthroughs; and as a solution to the world’s fast fashion problem.

The edition also covers the efforts of the @faunaflorafunga initiative to include fungi in the conservation frameworks at the local government and international policy levels, as well as presenting the adoption of the term “funga” by the National Geographic Society and their step of supporting more fungi related projects through grants. 🌎💪🏽

Friends with benefits: Plant interactions with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi’

I am an assistant professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. My background is in plant biology, with a focus on plant-microbe interactions. Specifically, my lab studies mutualistic plant interactions with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. In this symbiosis, plants benefit through increased mineral nutrient uptake and resilience to abiotic and biotic stress, whereas the fungus obtains carbon products from the host plant. We investigate the signaling pathways that allow plants to ensure an optimal balance between carbon costs and the nutrient benefits provided by the fungus. Because ˜80% of all land plant species can engage in a symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, it has important implications for the global carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycle, as well as agricultural sustainability.

All of these talented artists were showcased at the Fungus Fair this year in our first-ever art show! What a fun way to kick off the year, we will be doing more art events and workshops throughout the year, so please keep an eye out for them on our Instagram account. The next scheduled art event will be creating art for the annual Game of Shrooms, an awesome creative scavenger hunt with artists participating from all over the world!
